We went down to
Philadelphia where the traffic was very heavy. We managed a few shots of the
architecture. Some is quite ornate.
|
Many of the buildings are much older than those in most American cities,
reflecting Philadelphia's role in founding the country. |
Some buildings are very
imposing, especially the city halls.
|
The colours are turning and some really stand out. |
This is the Philadelphia
art museum | |
|
This tower is on Philadelphia's city hall. The figure on top is William Penn
and at one time no building was permitted to be higher than this. |
One of the biggest public
buildings is the Free Library.
|
I don't know but it would not surprise me to find this was funded by Andrew
Carnegie who came from Pittsburgh, the other major city in the state. |
Its difficult to spot
what all the buildings are as you drive past. Parking was impossible.
|
Another example of the spectacular autumn colours. |
We had actually come to
Philadelphia to visit the Mutter museum which contains medical samples of
unusual conditions. Sadly photographs are not permitted there. So we have
borrowed a few photos from elsewhere.
|
The museum contains collections of medical interests some of which are quite
gruesome. Centre stage here is a collection of skulls. |
It is a part of the
medical school of the university. The day we went was very busy, we think
with young medical students.
|
Most of the skulls have something wrong with them. Some people find this
absolutely fascinating but I don't think it was my scene. |
An area of great interest
was that of skin diseases and associated growths. But I found this 'horn' to
be a little extreme. Most of the items date from over a 100 years ago when
such things turned people into sideshows. They would deal with such things
long before they got to this state today.
|
They seemed fascinated with birth abnormalities which I know happen but
don't reach this stage these days. The place was crowded so some folk
obviously enjoy it and it was recommended to us. But..... |
We visited Laurel Hill
cemetery in Paramount Park. It is huge and quite confusing. Some of the
mausoleums are quite impressive.
|
Many of the names are Scottish or German in origin. |
