For several days we caught the PATH train to 33rd St. Today we went from there up towards Grand
Central Terminal. This is the entrance to an adjacent hotel. Very ornate
architecture. | |
|
We had to run the gauntlet of the ticket touts trying to sell us tickets for
the Empire State Building and other attractions. But we managed to escape. |
There are several towers
in Manhattan which are famous. This is the Chrysler Building, another
skyscraper from the art deco style of the 1930s. It is on 42nd St which
meets up with Broadway at Times Square (hence the name of the show). At
1046ft it was the tallest building in the world for 11 months in 1930 before
it was overtaken by the Empire State. It is still the tallest brick
building. | |
|
The clock on the side of Grand Central Station is a bit over the top. |
The Pershing Square
bridge carries Park Avenue into the station.
|
The main foyer is very grand. It is larger than Penn Central although that
is the larger and busier station. |
Several lines terminate
here carrying commuters to and from the city.
|
Commuter trains at rest after the morning peak. There are about 40 platforms
on two levels. |
Lunchtime deliveries from
a local deli. | |
|
A very modern sculpture over the entrance to the Roger Smith Hotel. |
St Bartholomew's Church
nestles between the skyscrapers as we walk up towards Central Park.
|
An odd but colourful sculpture on the central reservation. |
Skyscrapers at the
southern end of Central Park. I think this might be the Donald Trump Tower
Hotel on Columbus Circle. It is the 51st tallest building in New York.
|
A new skyscraper under construction with 80:
floors. This will shortly acquire much notoriety as the crane collapses in
hurricane Sandy. |
A major form of transport
is the yellow taxi of which there are thousands of different shapes and
sizes. | |
|
Note the sharp edges on these towers which presumably help with wind
resistance. |
A sculpture at Columbus
Circle. | |
|
So we walk back down Broadway towards Times Square on our way home. I think
we walked about 10 miles today. |

There were a bunch of businessmen in Times Square all looking up at this
billboard. I'm not sure why. |
