We left Scottsdale and
headed north to Flagstaff then further north to Grand Canyon, climbing most
of the way. Along the way we spotted this 2-6-6-2 mountain class locomotive
which used to haul logs out of the mountains.
|
After Flagstaff the land is generally flat although there are odd mountains
of sandstone just sticking up out of the otherwise empty plain. |
Further north there are
more trees. We took the scenic route across to the road from Williams to
Grand Canyon. | |

The pylons are a reminder that much of the power for the Phoenix area comes
from the hydro electric power on the Colorado river. |
A 'hill' on an otherwise
flat plain. | |
|
Our camping site had been guarded by this elk and he didn't seem in any
hurry to move. |
We just had time to reach
the canyon rim and catch the sunset. It really brings out the layers of
colour. | |
|
We were not alone as hundreds of other visitors were doing the same. |
The picture changed
constantly over about a half hour period.
It is impossible for the
camera to adequately record the changes as there are too many variables in
the process. | |
|
But I hope this sample of shots gives some idea of how spectacular it is. |
