The campsite in Radium
Hot Springs was in a canyon directly below the town (just visible through
the trees at the top). Perhaps that's why it had cable TV. It is a very
pleasant and secluded site.
|
Back on the road we entered the National Park system almost immediately. We
had to pay C$8 each for each day we were going to be in the park. This was
not so bad since it covered us for Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. The
initial part of the road is quite something! |
We did get stopped for
about 20 mins while they cleared up a rock fall. We're glad we weren't
underneath at the time.
|
The mountains seem endless as we pass through the Kootenays. The road is
good though, despite the minimal traffic. |
I think we will be tired
of snow capped peaks by the time we are done - but not just yet!.
|
Not very clear here but many of the trees on the lower slopes are dead. We
weren't sure if it was as a result of fire or marauding beetles. Oddly the
trees at the roadside seemed fine. |
It wasn't quite as murky
as the picture suggests but it wasn't bright and sunny. Snow is forecast.
|
More of the dead trees on either side of the river so it isn't a shortage of
water. |
As you join the Trans
Canada Highway about halfway between Banff and Lake Louise you are faced
with this impressive monolith. Taller than any we have seen so far, the
peaks are shrouded in cloud. This is Castle Mountain.
|
Mostly the peaks have been hidden. The weather is closing in although the
worst weather is forecast to the east of here. It is very cold as we arrive
at Lake Louise. |
