The start of July found us in Port Townsend at a fiddle festival. Then we
continued west on the Olympic Peninsula to the coast at La Push. This is another
Indian reservation area and very poor. All this coast is subject to an arctic
current and the sea is very cold. It seems strange to find such excellent but
empty beaches. We returned to Seattle to stay with more relatives of out New
York hosts for a few days. Then we headed south to Mount St Helens which is
still smoking, then into Oregon and across to the coast, which we followed for a
number of days, passing through Seaside along the way. We continued down the
coast until we just reached California and the Giant Redwood National Park. Then
a backtrack to Crater Lake and Lassen Volcanic Park while working our way down
through Reno to the eastern edge of Yosemite. We camped just outside the western
edge of the park at El Portal.
We kept the mileage down this month at 1900 miles. This is closer to our
original intention. |
