From the many sights of the Salt Lake/Provo area we headed north, pausing to
call at the Golden Spike where the east-west railroad was joined - in the middle
of nowhere. We were trying to reach Yellowstone National Park before the school
holidays. In the event we were a bit too early because it was still snowing. It
is impossible to underestimate the impact of altitude. All of this area is over
6000ft. But even this early in the season we had to book so our time was
limited. It was worth the trip for the wildlife and the scenery. Then we
backtracked a bit by heading east to Cody and the amazing Buffalo Bill Museum.
Then on to Custer and the Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore memorials. We headed
south intending to visit Wounded Knee but we couldn't find it and the general
area was one of the poorest I've seen anywhere in the world. Then north to the
natural wonders of the Badlands in both North and South Dakota. Then across
Montana which took several days. Montana state has the same population as
Sheffield! We also got caught in a spectacular storm here with hail which
damaged the RV. We saw both sides of Glacier National Park but could not travel
the Road to the Sun because the RV is too long. Northern Washington state is
sparsely populated and very rugged. We worked our way across via the Grand
Coulee Dam and eventually ended up at the end of the month just north of
Seattle.
Mileage at 2800 miles was just a touch more than last month. |
