Whilst not a museum as such, the Japanese Friendship Garden has
an entrance fee. San Diego is twinned with Yokohama in Japan and we found
many cultural links as well as naval ones. This stone book plaque
commemorates the links between the cities.
| This is a
traditional Japanese gate which was given to San Diego by the Japanese. Like
many Japanese gates it is ornamental, and doesn't go anywhere. |
This is a traditional friendship lantern which helps create the
image. | |
| The pool in the
centre of the garden has Koi carp, as might be expected. The water is
crystal clear unlike many of the gardens we have seen where it was murky.
This is more what we expected. |
The small Japanese building houses several artifacts including
this Bonsai tree in an illuminated alcove.
| There are several
kimonos hung on the walls with spectacular patterns embroidered onto the
material. |
If anything, this is even more beautiful. These are obviously
very special robes and would be quite valuable.
| This is a
traditional pre-tied obi (sash) with an obijime (cord) and a coordinating
purse. |
This is a traditional Japanese dolls house. The following shots
show the rooms at almost a larger than life size. The quality of the woodwork
is amazing. | |
